Just wondering... for as simple as punk is...
It can be quite hard to write. Mainly, I think, for the fact of not wanting the song to be the same progression or whatever as a ton of other songs. That's my problem. I write a progression then realize it's been done to death and end up scratching the whole thing.
Anyone else write punk music?
If so, how do you personally go about it?

You have to remember that EVERY chord progression you will come up with has been done to death. It's not the chord progression that makes your song original, it's the arrangement. Do something interesting with the chord progression.

Try playing with different timings and different strum patterns

Listen to good punk instead of the traditional token punk bands that people tell you are "punk".
Not all pop punk is bad ,just 99% of it!
Not all real punk is good,99% of it sucks!
Punk is a vast cesspool that you have to wade through to get to that one good song of if you are really lucky that one good band.
Punk is very hit and miss music. Some bands that are considered legendary only have one or two good songs imo.

I pretty much just find a chord progreession that sounds alright, and add palm mutes intermitantly and maybe some wah to it. Also, as the other people have said, pretty much any punk music you write has been done, what makes it original is the words that go with the music.

I'd say "DON'T FORGET TO ROCK"!!!!
Put the music first.
Then add either funny lyrics or snotty, bratty lyrics.
Try and have a good, strong sound and not a weak one.
Have some balls and take a solo.It can be simple and use "double stops" and be like a chuck berry solo but take a frikken chance.
Be serious about the music but have a sense of humor about the lyrical content.
Whoever sings tell them not to sing like a weiner or a whiner.
But also not to grunt or yawn like a grunger or nu metaller.
Thou shalt not SUCK!

Guttermouth is the only punk band I like just because they make me rofl with their lyrics :)
