The following are the your first phrases in this new language. Memorize them so that you do not have to look at the screen to play them.

the first two notes are played by barring your first finger across strings 1 and 2 at the fifth fret

I'm not sure how to read the pictures (on the site)
what do the 5 and the 7 mean?

Hi.

The vertical lines represent the strings and the numbers (5 and 7 in this case) represent the fret number(s)

Example:

el----------------------
Bl-------------------
Gl--------------------
Dl--------5----7------
Al----7--------------
El----------------------

This means play the A string on fret 7 and play the D string on frets 5 then 7
