Hi guys, Im new here, & am not sure if im posting in the right place, but i will give it a go. Im having trouble with my peavey amp. It seems like when I play for a while & it gets really warmed up it gets really distorted, & terrible sounding. Somtimes it does not do this. Its a very large amp head, which I am only running through monitor speakers. Is it my amp?? What can I replace? Somone said it may be the tubes. But if they were out my amp would be down. Im confused here, please help.

Im sorry Guys, I did not see the Gear Forum.

it could be the tubes, how long have you had the amp?

I have had it about a month, its not brand new, But its not very old either. The guy I got it from said it doesnt work at all so I can Have it. So I checked the fuse, & that was blown, replaced it & then it worked. But sounded ****ty after playing a while. It hasnt done it the last few times ive played, but I only played for about 20-25 min.

well it wouldn't hurt to replace the tubes, you could replace them with ones you'd prefer to be in there, and if it still aint what you want... take it to your music store or something. Maybe you should do that first.

What most likely happened was a tube or few went bad and caused a fuse to blow. You replaced the fuse now running bad tubes. Just a possibility. But bad tubes do work and do sound bad. Just because the amp "works" doesn't mean the tubes aren't bad. For sure replace the tubes. Put nice ones in it too, and have it professionally biased (if it has a bias on it). You can rip apart your power tubes if the amp is not properly biased. So take the amp to a tech, tell him what tubes to put in it, and tell him you'd like it biased along with anything else that might need done w/ the tubes. It may cost some $$$ but the dude GAVE you the amp!

Oh yeah, and another thing, make sure you have the impedances matched between the head and speakers! You will seriously destroy that amp's output transformer and tubes.

Thanks, I kinda figured its the tubes, they look as if in one spot where they must get hottest they melted the glass dome around the tube, not through, but its deformed there. YES I did get off easy in recieving the amp, so it would most definitely be worth putting the approx $120 in tubes into it. Correct me if im wrong but thats about what four would about be, right?
Thanks again!

Well, it depends on the tube what the price is. If it's a preamp tube (12AX7) it's gonna be about 10 bucks a piece. If it's a power tube (6L6) it's gonna be 20 bucks at the cheapest for a matched pair. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the amp you have has Six 6L6 power tubes, four 12AX7 preamp tubes, and two 12AT7 preamp tubes. Which is going to be WELL over 100 bucks for the tubes alone. Getting it biased will cost at least 50 bucks. I would fully expect 200 bucks when it's all through. But, once you get the amp biased to the tubes you have, all you have to do is get the same power tubes again and no need to rebias, which is handy.

4 doesn't sound like enough. Tubes aren't always in glass casings. They also can be metal as well. They look like capacitors when they are the metal cased ones. I looked up the peavey Roadmaster head and it said it had 6 6l6s, 4 12ax7s, and 2 12at7s. You may have a different head, but 4 doesn't sound like enough to me.

Your right, There are four glass ones, one that looks like a giant metal capacitor, & two large boxes one on each side approx 5x6". May I asked where you looked it up?? I could not find it anywhere. I searched at google. Another thing while im at it, I have an old guitar I found of my dad's, it does not say what kind it is, he does not know either somone gave it to him a while ago, it kind of resembles an epiphone. It has a serial #, right atop of the model #. Where could I look this up?

I looked it up on harmony central.com's user reviews in the amp section. The roadmaster reviews i found on there were on an old 1984 made amp. So it may not be what you have.

The two boxes on either side of the tubes are your transformers. If I were you I'd take it to a peavey service center and have 'em do anything that needs done to it.

Can't help ya on the guitar thing, if there's no brand name you're pretty much out of luck unless someone knows that guitar.
