Getting speed and accuracy can be done in many ways. A good way to get faster is using a metranome. But those of us who still hone to our non clicking practices will find these exercises especially usful.
I begin with this run in the G major scale, three notes per string:
ascending:
E|-------------------------|-------------------------|-------5-7-8-|
B|-------------------------|-------------------5-7-8-|-5-7-8-------|
G|-------------------------|-------4-5-7-4-5-7-------|-------------|
D|-------------------4-5-7-|-4-5-7-------------------|-------------|
A|-------3-5-7-3-5-7-------|-------------------------|-------------|
E|-3-5-7-------------------|-------------------------|-------------|
descending:
E|-10-8-7---------------------|-------------------------|------------|
B|--------10-8-7-10-8-7-------|-------------------------|------------|
G|----------------------9-7-5-|-9-7-5-------------------|------------|
D|----------------------------|-------9-7-5-9-7-5-------|------------|
A|----------------------------|-------------------9-7-5-|-9-7-5------|
E|----------------------------|-------------------------|-------8-7-5|
This is a six note pattern that repeats itself through the scale. It can be played with a metranome, but if played smoothly and clearly you don't need to have one.
The next run is in A harmonic minor, using the D Dorian #4 mode:
ascending:
E|----------------------------------------------------------|
B|----------------------------------------------------------|
G|----------------------------------------------------------|
D|----------------------------------12-14-15-14-12-14-15-18-|
A|----------11-12-14-12-11-12-14-15-------------------------|
E|-10-12-13-------------------------------------------------|
E|-------------------------------------------19-20-22-20-19-|
B|-------------------------17-18-21-18-21-22----------------|
G|-14-16-17-16-14-16-17-19----------------------------------|
D|----------------------------------------------------------|
A|----------------------------------------------------------|
E|----------------------------------------------------------|
descending:
E|-22-20-19-------------------------------------------------|

E|----------------------------------------------------------|

G|----------------------------------------------------------|
D|-18-15-14-15-14-12----------------------------------------|
A|-------------------15-14-12-14-15-14-12-11----------------|
E|-------------------------------------------13-12-10-12-13-|
This one is an eight note pattern that repeats. Again, using a metranome can be used, but... You get the idea. Heres the last one, its a six note pattern like the first but it has a variation. I used C augmented scale, and it sounds pretty frickin' cool:
ascending:
E|-----------------------------------------------------------------|
B|-----------------------------------------------------------------|
G|-----------------------------------------------------------------|
D|-----------------------------------------9---------------9-10-13-|
A|---------8---------------8-11-12-8-11-12---12-11-8-11-12---------|
E|-8-11-12---12-11-8-11-12-----------------------------------------|
E|------------------------------------------------------------|
B|----------------------------------10---------------10-12-13-|
G|--------9---------9-10-13-9-10-13----13-10-9-10-13----------|
D|9-10-13---13-10-9-------------------------------------------|
A|------------------------------------------------------------|
E|------------------------------------------------------------|
E|----------11----------------11-12-13-|
B|-10-12-13----13-12-10-12-13----------|
G|-------------------------------------|
D|-------------------------------------|
A|-------------------------------------|
E|-------------------------------------|
descending(scale switch to A harmonic minor):
E|-13-12-10---------------------------------------------------|
B|----------13-12-10-13-12-10---------------------------------|
G|----------------------------13-10-9-13-10-9-----------------|
D|--------------------------------------------12-10-9-12-10-9-|
A|------------------------------------------------------------|

G|-------------------------|
D|-------------------------|
A|-12-11-8-12-11-8---------|
E|-----------------12-10-8-|
I am positive that if you use alternate picking throughout these runs your scale articulation and picking will improve. Remember the patterns and use them in other scales, this will open a lot of avenues for your shredding pleasure.
