Hi, I'm assuming you've not bought a guitar yet.

Deciding which guitar to get depends on your budget and what kind of music you want to play.

But for lessons, the First Fret section at Cyberfret covers all the basics, tuning, strumming chords, hand positions etc....

if you haven't bought your guitar yet, take a look at this helpful guide for buying a guitar

O.K, this is probably not the answer you want, but everyone's different. It depends on how much you practice and if you take lessons or not. Lessons will probably make learning the basics seem easier and you may learn them faster.

Personally I found it quite easy to get the basic chords and start strumming some songs. Playing solo's was a bit more difficult though.

Maybe a month or two, at about 2 hours a day, for me to play my first few chords to a song confidently and correctly.

Although, I've never had any formal lessons. A friend taught me the basic chords.

You probably would be hapier with the tone of a dreadnaught acoustic guitar instead of a classical. Classical guitars dont sound right when you try to play a song that is mainly electric, when with a dreadnaught, many electric songs come out great. But then again, electrics are a lot easier to learn on. Just some information. (Oh, and to second something that someone already said, go to the 1st fret section). Well,

well you MIGHT be wanting to get a dreadnaught guitar. BUT it depends what style you want to play.
Basically a classic guitar is for playing classical music. But I learnt some metallica stuff on mine =]
I'd really suggest to you straight off to take lessons. And this also depends on style as well. If you are planning to play classical guitar, you are going to need to take specific lessons for it. I don't think there is an internet site in the whole WWW that will help you out as much as a teacher can with classical guitar lessons. There are some books, but a respected teacher is best. There are alot of things that help you to play easier/more efficient in classical guitar. You also need a stool, and a foot rest =]
I haven't taken classical guitar lessons myself... I just read off a website about all of this, and after watching some classical guitarists I can see how the training worked
