soloing over bassline

hey,
I was just wondering the other night if like, for example Eddie van Halen, when he does his solos, does he just use michael anthony's bassline to solo/improvise over? Is that the same with most guitarists? Is is easier to solo over a bass line or rythm guitar part then it is to without? Thanks alot.

It helps give meaning to your solo by giving a point of reference for the notes you play.

Some peeps to it with the drums, although it's more rhythm based. I believe most do it to rhythm guitar.

thanks guys, thats what i though cuz i noticed it was a lot harder ta make a good solo over nuthing but drums but just wanted ta check;)
