Erm......wait until you get your guitar and I'm sure things will start to make sense (chord charts and that kind of thing).
It's bound to look complicated if you don't even have a guitar yet.
Come back on friday and tell us how easy it all is.:)

Trust us, its not half as hard as it looks, unless you are a total ditz. But lets hope that you are not.
oohhh!! iv got a problem!! i think iv gone and got the rong guitar!! iv got a acoustic (classical) or sumfin n iv just been told that i can play the music i want on that coz that kind of guitar is for classical music? is this true? i want to b able to play my fav songs like stereophonics wen iv learnt etc!! can i on this guitar?
you can play a song that was written for electrics on acoustics and vice versa: nylon/steel acoustic and electrics (and 12strings and the top 6 strings of a 7string) are tuned the same way in standard tuning and the frets raise the pitch of a string by a half-step on all of them -> so from the basics, all guitars are similar.
However, if you want the sound of an electric, get an electric.
But you're a beginner: it will take some time before you can play songs.

Hey hang in there! I'm also a first time beginer with a classical accoustic guitar, and am not having too much trouble picking out stuff that I like. The first thing that sounded like music I was able to do was the intro to "Wish you were here" by Pink Floyd!!
Please correct me if I'm wrong here, everyone, but the biggest difference between a classical accoustic and any other accoustic, is the neck is a little wider, and it's got nylon strings instead of metal. The string difference is a big one since it's easier on your fingers.
Just like anything else, it will take practice, and lots of it, but so far I'm having a lot of fun with it and am sure you will too!

Why dont you return it and get an electric (I believe that thats the type of guitar your fav. bands play). Thats unless there is no return ploicy. Lets hope that there is.
Yes, "Wish you were here" by PinkFloyd is a very nice song for the acoustic guitar, I also like it a lot!
If I was you (lauz), I wouldn't return the classical guitar: it's a good thing to learn with. Personally, I started on a classical guitar and apart from the fact that steel strings hurt a little on my fingers, switching to steel string guitars was very very easy because of their thinner neck. Same for electrics.

heh!!,
like any other thing on th' planet,
ya gotta start with small bits at a time.
learn the basic notes, play 'em till
yer sick of em. explore th' fretboard.
don't worry about playin' anything just yet.
ya got a new toy!! it's just like learnin' a new language, don't expect to be fluent overnite!!
and th' most important thing ya gotta do is
KEEP YER GUITAR IN TUNE!!!
get an electronic tuner if ya have to, until
ya git yer ear!!
hope this helps, it's a long, fun road
yer on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I jus got my first classical guitar on Monday night and I am just learnin some very basic riffs. I also dont bother keeping it in tune, ive only had it for 2 days so its not something ive had a chance to worry about.
The best riff for a begginer to learn is the intro to Deep Purple - Smoke on the water.

.....hey, but it just doesn't sound right if your guitar is out of tune.......
Well, you needn't necessarily go for the 440Hz-standard-tuning, but keep your guitar tuned in itself, else the smoke on the water will soon be curling away ;)
»2 days«, hmmmmm, tuning my guitar actually was the first thing I did with my guitar, you know just to get some sound out of this strange wooden thingy. Trying to tune it was the perfect play-around for me.
Maybe you bought your one tuned, well, lucky you (as mine came from a fleemarket, it wasn't).....but as new guitars with new string tend to go out of tune, because they are not settled and opened up, that won't stay for long, so take some good advice:
Train your ear and tune your guitar!!!!!!!

Lauz,
Trust me, if it can be played on an electric, it can be played on an acoustic (most of the time). Also, whomever told you that a "classical"-bodied guitar is for playing classical music only is wrong 100%.
I play rock songs "unplugged" a lot, meaning, I play them on my acoustic guitars. Learning to play your favorite rock songs on an acoustic guitar will grant you the ability to play an electric guitar easier when you get one.
Just stick with it and know that you WILL get better at it, there is no doubt about that.

relax....
it does take a bit of time to learn to play the guitar! start off with the first fret section of the lessons on this site. if you can play those three chord, you can play a bunch of songs (there is a bunch of them listed in one of the threads). keep in mind that it will take more than just practice to get better. you mentioned that you have folks around to show you stuff.... well, have them show you stuff!! remember: rome wasn't built in a day and don't give up.

Try the lesson on the basic 7 chords here at Cyberfret http://www.cyberfret.com/chords/beginning-7/index.php
As for barre (power) chords, try this essay by guitar guru, haha, Jamey Andreas http://www.cyberfret.com/power-practicing/easy-bar-chords.php
