Check out a Dean Edge 1J and a Yamaha RBX260. Both of those are around $200 US. Both are good starter basses.

im sure ive already said this many times, but...

yamaha's are fantastic guitars for the money, between me and my bands other guitarist we own three (My 12 string acoustic, and his electro acoustic and solidbody) and i know somebody with a yam bass, all of which are perfect for what they are.

I got my bass guitar from Epiphone... The bass and the amp were about $300 total.

I had one of the Dean Edge basses, decent for the price, great sound, nice neck, but watch the quality. Loose screws, alignment of bridge with the neck, action and intonation, etc. The first one I got was so poorly built that I took it back and swapped it for the other one they had on display, which was of better build quality.

The fender MB-4 seems good. Actions on its good. Bodys smaller and lighter weight then most basses. It uses P/J pickups so can get a couple diffrent sounds out of it. About $200.00

I use an ESP B-50. Cost me $220 CAD so Im guessing it'll be around $190-200 American. It has 24 frets and seems like a very good bass. Split coil in the next and single coil in the bridge.

I would say a good Yamaha, but not too bad of one. Youll see, when you get better at Bass, you wont want some crappy bass that was 100$. And youll be stuck with the bad one. So make a good decision and dont be afraid to spend money, you wont regret it. And if people say that "That bass is too good for you" or something, dont listin.

i recommend a yamaha, i play an rbx 270bl and i think it kicks ass as well as looking the part, cheap and good for beginners/intermediates. check out ebay for cheap basses and other gear at half the price as it would normally be you would be suprised at what youll find.
