Ive realized lately that if i just sit down and start improvising with scales and stuff I can play real fluid and fast and eddie van halen style stuff. Then when I get to improvising solos during songs it doesnt sound as well, it feels like im kinda restricted from doing some of the stuff that I can when I just sit down and solo. When i have a set piece, like Mr. Crowley for example, there's no problem there. It just seems to be during the middle of songs. When I just jam to the radio or sumthin it sounds good too. So thats where I need a little help. Thanks

yeah, I always play in key, its the technical parts thats different. Its wierd, when i first start the solo in a song that i improvise, i feel restricted in the technical area, then after awhile I really get into it and i can start playin the things that i actually wanna play and whats goin on in my head.

I have a hard timing get into it too, takes me awhile but after a bit you just feel and understand where you wanna go,, but it just takes awhile , for me at least.. I just think it's a lack of experince in my case..

I watched a video by Marty Friedman on Melodic Control. Its changed my style for the better. When i soloed all i could think about was scales, scales and scales. But in terms of melody thats such a poor way to look at soloing.
Marty describes how he only thinks about the chord he is currently playing over, rather than the key or scale etc.
So when he is soloing he will emphasise the notes of the chords he is playing over, and then add in extra notes from scales.
Wild_axeman gave a good analogy... smthin along the lines of Scales are like jewellery, use them to make ur solo beautiful but dont over do it.
LOL ud look like a pimp!!

Check out this... (http://www.guitarlodge.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10725)
Yeah u gotta have a basic grounding in arpeggios and stuff. coz arpeggios are basically chords, but each note played one at a time. Creates nice melody when u mix em up and add in scale notes for flavouring.
