the right hand

im just starting out on the bass, ive been playing for a couple of weeks... got a couple of books and practicing and enjoying it.
my left hand technique, 1 finger per fret etc seems to be developing ok... im just wondering about my right hand, finger picking that is.
Books say you gotta get right hand indepndence and use your index and middle alternating... ive had a go at this and i cant get it to work... maybe it would come in time, but ive kinda been doins stuff my own way and it seems to be working...
im just worried about learning bad habits and then finding it hard to braek them later

what tips can you give me about getting my right hand up to scratch, i want to play fast - metal kinda stuff.

well if you wanna play fast your gonna have to slow down.. huh?.. if your having a hard time getting both fingers going try just slowing down slow enough so you can actually get some independence, then get comforatable with the movements. Then slowly you'll beable to speed them up.. even if it's on one string and one note, just try picking a tempo and keeping it with the 2 fingers,, It's all practise practise,,,

i do use both fingers, just cant get em to go in the index, middle, index, middle, i, m, i, m, i, m...etc pattern that the book says...
kinda use them both but in no particular pattern...

is it worth learning this technique? or learning to use more fingers?... coz it feels like im going backwards when i try and practice the technique ive described... stuff i can play doing it "my way" just doesnt work when i try the i,m,i,m,i,m,i,m right hand fingering.

any other advice will be gratefully accepted ... im off for the night now, will pick up stuff tomorrow.

its very usefully to know this skill.

jsut practice with out a bass hold up your hand and mover one finger at a time as yoru own pace

when im playing, I never alternate my fingers from index to middle each time, I alternate when im changing strings or when theres a change in beat. Im not exactly the ideal bassist for learning technique off of, so listen to the others.lol
