strumming

Could someone please help me out here. I just purchased a music book called The music of the Eagles made easy for guitar . In this book all the chords are strummed with single strums like
[ Am / / / / / / / / E / / / / / / / / ]

Now could I change the single strums to double? If so would I still do the eight strums for each chord or would it change to four strums for each chord

A lot of books tell you the chords, but don't tell you anything about the strumming patterns. I'd listen to the song to try to figure out how they're playing it.
