I'm pretty sure i know what it means I just want to be 100% sure. Example: smells like teen spirit.

not mute the string....Its when you take your left hand and lay it across the strings so they dont ring out. Its called a dead note. You get a 'clinky' sound. HArd to explain.

Everyone is correct....
Mute the string(s) but use your fret hand not your pick hand

I agree, except for the guy with the carrot sticking out of his ear.
its muting by putting ur fingers all over the strings while using ur pick 2 sturm...
I've seen 'x's used to indicate palm muting. I always figured that one had to listen to the song to know.

when u have to palm mute a note there is an X above it when u hace to just mute it the X is written in the tab

Every tab is different, it might be an m, I've seen parentheses... it could get a bit confusing sometimes.
All the more reason not to use 'em.
