Okay guys, I have finally picked up a guitar for the first time in 14 years so I don't remember anything. If anyone would like to fill me in a little on reading sheet music, it would be greatly appreciated or know of any websites that go into great detail that would be nice too. What I am having so much trouble with is figuring out for instance, which A to play. I don't know how you decide which one to play. Any help at all is wanted. Thanks gurus.

Hi! I see this is your first post...Welcome to CyberFret! Have you checked out the reading section on this site? If not, see if that helps in getting you started again. If that doesn't work, we will try to help you along another way! Keep us "posted" on your progress! :p

If you are reading standard notation and you see for instance....A 2nd space up from the bottom of the staff...there is no way to tell where to play it. It could be the 2nd fret 3rd string, 7th fret 4th string, 12th fret 5th string. They are all the same A. That is what makes reading standard notation a little more difficult on the guitar than other instruments. If you see that same A on the piano, then there is only one place on the instrument to play it.

Most music that is specifically for guitar uses another system of notation called tablature. Tablature will tell you exactly on what string and what fret to play that note. You will want to have a good basic understanding of how to read standard notation. The reading section hear at Cyberfret.com will give you a good foundation in reading in the 1st position. I have not really seen any other site that has an online method for leaning to read standard notation. But you could also look into getting just a basic beginning level book that goes through reading basics.

Here is the reading section of Cyberfret.com. You will find info on reading standard notation, and tablature.
