im completely self taught from scratch, and it always seems to have been a case of wanting to learn too much at once.
For example in the first few months i was really into reading up on all the more advanced theory without first stopping to try and understand the basics. I dunno, i think that maybe lessons would've offered more structure and taught me things in order as opposed to my inital scattergun approach.
but then i believe that wether or not your suited to lessons is totally a personality thing.
personally ive never liked taking lessons in anything, always thought of learning set things at set times somewhat restrictive, dont know why, think im jus' a freak haha

yes i see where u are coming from. do you have any suggestions or advice on how to become a better guitar player if ur self taught?
i read guitar world magazine and use it's tabs as well as a weezer tab book, a tab book with 75 songs and tabs from the internet. thats all i can say to do i dunno - thanks

personally, I teach myself how to play. But that is only because I feel I'm capable to learn something without guidance from a guitar teacher. I've taken guitar lessons for 4 years now, which is how long I've actually been playing the guitar, and every year my guitar teacher says that I've improved alot, and I think thats a combination of gutiar lessons and my studies at home on the net and just playing. I teach myself guitar... but I also get taught.

WeezerChild703:
i found it helpful to use the time i spent playing as effectivly as possible. Personally i would recomend setting aside 2 hours a day, spending one our practicing technique (pull offs, hammer ons etc) and theory (scales etc) and an hour playing tabs you have, just learning to play songs you like.
this way your breaking up the sometimes tedious practicing of technique with playing songs you enjoy.
this is just a guide however, try and spend as much time as possible.
Personally, i spend around 3 hours a day minimum, sometimes 4 or 5 if i can get the time. (being at college i get alot of free time haha)

Hey WeezerChild703, I think the lessons on scales and theory (well, pretty much every lesson) are really good. I was very confused about a lot the theory untill I read these lessons and now I'm fairly confident and competant, so I would recommend them.:)

I do. Go to www.wholenote.com for some very good ones. The members submit the lessons there. Plus there are many people who have been playing for 20+ or 30+ years, even one person who has been playing since the 1940's.
