View Full Version : Help with a song
Ok, i recently bought the Linkin Park :- Hybrid Theory Tab Edition and decided i'd start with the song "one step closer". Now i'm good with reading tab and putting what's on the paper with what i hear on a cd but i'm sure the tab book isn't complete.
The only tab pieces the book gives are :-
Intro
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------7---------------------------------------------------------
---0---5---7-------------8---7---0---3-------------------------------
Main Riff
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------9----------------------------5------------------------
--0-----0-----0---------------8-----7-----x----------------------------
--0-----0-----0--7-----------8-----7------x--3------------------------
--0-----0-----0---------------8-----7-----x----------------------------
And the harmonics leading into the 2nd chorus
----------------------------------
----------------------------------
----3----(2)----(2)-------------
------------------------(2)------
----------------------------------
----------------------------------
That's it, now can someone who is familiar with the song give me some suggestion as to what i do with sections like :-
1. Just before each chorus, when Chester sings "Just like before"
2. The bridge Section, while Chester is singing "shut up" repeatedly.
I'm guessing that the standard notation that fills the remainder of the 4 pages would tell me this, but i don't know how to read it yet. That's why i bought the TAB EDITION!!! :(

LEARN STANDARD NOTATION!
Then once you have learnt standard notation, realise that you're too good to be playing linkin park and start playing some Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Metallica, and Yngwie Malmsteen.
Well in all good tab books, above the standard notation (above every staff) there are the chords. If it says E5, thats an E power chord. Any letter with a 5 following it means it is a power chord
Hehe, i actually like a few of their songs(Linkin park), but most of the stuff i do know is Metallica or Pantera. I know i need to learn standard notation, but it seems stupid that you buy a tab edition of a book and need to know Standard notation to read it.
I had noticed the Chords above the standard notation, so i guess i'll have to work it out from those for now. Most of them do have 5 after them, except the occational one has a 2.

not really. Standard notation lets you know the rhythm of song.

Tab books are not always as accurate as they should be, but they should have at least some tab/notation for those parts of the song - even if its just chords boxes above the stave.
Make sure it doesn't say adlib when there is a solo/complex part in the song because usually there will be no tab for this.
There could be something called a fill which will be in a seperate box at the bottom of the page, or it will say "w/Fig1", this means that you play a previous part of the song. For example:
Fig1.............................................. ..............l
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------9----------------------------5------------------------
--0-----0-----0---------------8-----7-----x----------------------------
--0-----0-----0--7-----------8-----7------x--3------------------------
--0-----0-----0---------------8-----7-----x----------------------------
This means next time you see w/Fig1, you will play the above tab.
Having said all that, I don't actually know the song, so all that might have been a waste of time:D

would you call any Linkin Park song a GREAT song?????
hehe, thanks Fury, altho i did know that. The harmonics actually came from a box like that rather than being in the main body of music.
smfulla, i am not by any means called it a great song, lol, i'm just looking at it from the same perspective as Pezcore, it seems like a fun, easy song to thrash along to :)

haha yeah it is
No matter what ive been playing i love to come back to One Step Closer just as a sort of relaxing, non-demanding fun thrash.
are you still needing to know the tab for the bridge etc sections? if so ive just managed to find it under a pile of paper on my desk :)
as for it being great music, it depends what you class as great. If your talking pure technical ability required then no, its not great. But if you look at it from the perspective that its encouraged kids worldwide to pickup a guitar and start to learn then yes, its great music.

Where are they?? i would like to play this song :D
Well the bits i put at the top really do most of the song. Just trying to work out those bits by ear and standard notation at the moment. Not sure what happened to the rest of the tab that was meant to be posted up, grrrrrrr ;) hehe

ok things haven't exactly gone to plan, due to bad weather the powers down at my house, and some of my tabs (including linkin park) are currently in the possession of my bands rhythm player, so - with my guitar and music over 10 miles away and no way to get them im gonna have to tab this out again quickly straight from memory, ill have all my stuff by this weekend, so ill double check it and make any corrections probably on sat. until then, i think this should be right, i'd be grateful if someone could play it through, as im unable to right now.

there you go, just listen to the cd for strum patterns, timings etc.
as i said, i know ive already tabbed out a 100% correct version of this, and as soon as i get it back ill check it against this one, im pretty sure this is right though.
