Here's a real misfit question... Does the pickguard form part of the accoustics of an accoustic guitar? The reason i'm asking is that I want to "spruce up" an old guitar for my brother by decorating the pickguard (with some kind of permanent marker design or something). Will that damage the accoustics of the guitar? The pickguard is plastic. Don't worry, I won't do anything until someone tells me if it's harmful or not.

Drawing on the pickgaurd with a permanent marker would not effect the sound. If this is an old crappy guitar, I would say go for it. But if this is a good quality guitar, I personally would avoid drawing on it. It will lower the value of the guitar....unless you are one heck of an artist. And if it is a guitar that has been in your family for a while, then when you are older you are going to regret defacing it. Yep, I am a little older :) So I am never a fan of slapping stickers on guitars and drawing on them. But the answer is no, it will no effect the sound.

Yep, it's definitely an old, crappy guitar. No name or brand markings that I can see. Neither myself nor my parents know where it came from, and it couldn't have come from our family. I'm fixing it up right now actually... The tuning pegs are actually rusted! Lots of scratches and dents, needs new strings, a new tuning peg, and a lot of cleaning and dusting. I'll take your words to heart though, and check out the history before I decorate. If I do and it works out, I'll send you a pic of the finished result!
