hello everyone

i'm a bass player. i currently do not own a guitar, but i'm looking for a guitar to write songs and improve my guitar skills on. i'd like to spend as little money as possible - i don't care what type it is - strat copy, les paul copy, whatever. i'm just looking for something CHEAP that isn't a total piece of crap. i'd like the neck/playability to be halfway decent and the tone slightly better than rubber bands on cardboard.

can anyone suggest brands/models that give the most bang for the buck at the lowest price possible? thanx for any help you can give.

Hey, well any guitar you get would be good, but if I were you I'd go down to the local guitar center and take a look around and play a lot of cheaper guitars to find out which one you want. I have to say that squier strats, although many people hate them, are good first guitars. Just get a cheap guitar you like then once you get good you can get a better one, or if you decide the guitar isn't for you, you wouldn't have made a huge dent in your wallet.

My Danelectro Hearsay was only $180, I dunno if that's cheap enough for ya. It has built-in distortion, not the raging metal kind but more of a hollow, retro sound (to go with the whole Dano theme). It sounds brighter than most other guitars I've heard, and is pretty damn light. I don't know much about tone and playability stuff, I just play whatever I have at the time and it works for me...
Hope it helps....

The Danelectros are pretty nice. For the price that is. You should look at the Kramers on musicyo.com They are pretty awesome for the price. Stay away from epiphone and squier!

Musicians Friend has DeArmonds on close out sale. I just got a
M-72 for $200 - very nice for the price. Set neck, mahogany body and neck, flame maple top, humbuckers. Its well worth $200.
They also have some lower end DeArmonds for $99.

lmao this cracks me up.....

squires arent too bad in my opinion, they got quite thick necks though that's the only off putting thing for me.

By some absurd luck I stumbled upon this thread again after 4.5 years. I ended up with an Ibanez gsa60. I decided the Ibanez necks were faster than other cheaper guitars. The tone is sort of underwhelming, but the playability is pretty good. Cheers!
