Is it Real?

I am getting more interested in tonewoods, now that I am deep into the new guitar hunting process. My question now is:
Is there a way to tell real maple from other woods stained to look like maple?
I know that, for most of us Great Unwashed, telling woods apart is a higher art form, much like telling wines apart without reading the label. I know I will never be able to identify the bathroom door from a tuna boat with my eyes closed, but any hints would be helpful.

there are some pretty good websites posted in this thread about wood...

also....if these dont help...if you ever go into your music store you could ask the people there to show you the different types of wood on different instruments and what they look like...how to tell them apart....if they have anyone knowledgable enough there they should be able to handle that....
