I just started taking guitar lessons. My instructor wants me to learn the C, G, & D chords for our next lesson. My problem is, my fingers will not make the stretch to get the C or G chords.

On the G chord I can finger the 5th and 6th strings but as soon as I try to finger the 1st string my 2nd finger hits the 5th string and my 1st finger hits the 4th string. I have tried this chord using fingers 1, 2 & 3 and fingers 2, 3 & 4.

On the C chord I can finger the 4th and 5th strings but as soon as I try to finger the 2nd string, my 2nd finger hits the 3rd string and my 3rd finger hits the 4th string. Also, the stretch from the 1st fret to the 3rd fret is too much for my fingers. By time I get to the 3rd fret, my finger is too far away from the fret and all I get is vibration. I don’t have small hands so it is getting very frustrating.

I have practiced for hours and I am not getting any closer to playing these chords. Is there a trick to this? Can someone offer some advice?

Well, for the G chord using fingers 1, 2 & 3 try placing your 3rd finger down slightly - and I mean only Slightly - before the other two fingers. As for using fingers 2, 3 and 4 try placing your 2nd and 3rd down first then adding your pinky.

Now the C chord. Place your 1st finger down then your 2nd and finally your 3rd. The reason you put one finger down first is to anchor your hand on the fretboard. The time space between placing your fingers down should be very short. After a while of doing this it will become easy to form the chord and you will not have to place one finger down at a time. I'm sure your teacher will advise you on how to do this better than I can, after all, that's what's (s)he is for.
