That's called a barre chord, you play all the strings with one finger, you just lay it across them all. Let's say you have this chord:
-4-
-4-
-4-
-6-
-6-
-4-
You would use your index finger on the fourth fret, laying across all the strings and use your ring and pinky fingers on the 6th fret.

well actually you only have 4 fingers when it comes to playing guitar
you dont use your thumb normally....
when it says like to play six in a row thats probably a barre chord and this means you use your index finger to block all six
if you can give me an example of a tab you are trying to play perhaps i can help you further
also , if you are a begginer, you may not want to start with barre chords just yet....theyre a bit more difficult...
ciao....

Don't knock the thumb, it's used a lot, and not just in fingerpicking.
I don't know what kind of music you're into, misstigger, but if you go here, (http://www.guitarlodge.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=129&highlight=easy+songs+list) you might find something you like there.
Learn both tabs and standard notation, they'll both come in handy.
