View Full Version : Weird thing-a-ma-bob
I got some sheets from the jazz band director, and I ran into a weird notation doo-hickey. Here's a crude drawing of it.

o---/---------
I'm not sure if anyone can decipher that, so I'll explain. In a hypothetical situation, there's a half note, the weird slash-attached-to-a-stem thingy, and another half note. What is this slash thingy? It is some kind of slide? If so, why isn't it written as a slur?

Took me a while of looking at it in different ways. Thought the bars were measures, but they're the stem of the note.
To me, it looks like either a mute or a rhythm slash, but I'm not sure...
The guitar player who sabotaged last year's tryout told me it's an 'open note,' which means I can play anything I want. Learning from the whole, 'Ignore the notes in the staff. He just wants you to play the chords over the measure' fiasco, I discredited his claim. Though, a percussive click is probably what that thingy is.

a "click" is usually an "x" with a stem. i would say that it's a rhythm slash, but i'd have to see it. does it have a chord written above? because it might be note-chord-note.
If I could scan it and post a link, I would.
There isn't a chord above. On the actual sheet, It's an eighth note barred to that slashy thing, which is a sixteenth note barred to another sixteenth note that is tied to another note of the same pitch.
That slashy thing is a noodle scratcher.
