I have seen in many tabs referencing a capo. I was wondering how much these things cost and can they be put on any guitar ( or are they brand/type specific? )
Also, do you have to alter anything when playing with a capo? such as tuning or something like that?
thanks

Capo's usually range between $2 and $100 and they are not brand specific. As usual it depends on the quality. Since you're just starting out I suggest you get something in the $10 range. They always worked fine for me. Off the top of my head, check out musiciansfriend.com or samash.com. They have a wide selection of capos.
when you use capo's you don't have to alter anything. just keep in mind that your sound will be at a higher pitch depending on what fret you'll be positioning the capo.

they basically move the nut up however many frets you put it on. It's like having a 6th finger to barre all 6 strings at a fret.

Here is a lesson on using a capo to check out.

Before I worked up the six bucks for a real capo, I used a dish rag, a C-Clamp, and the plastic handle of a broken butter knife for a capo. How hardcore is that? :D
I still use it on my 12-string. The junky little screw-capo I have doesnt have enough presssure to hold down all those strings. Heck, neither do I, really; I suppose I should work up the 13$ to get some lighter strings.........

thanks for the help guys...I got myself a Keyser capo, cost me 25 dollars CDN. There were some cheaper ones there as well, but I figured might as well get something that will work right and last, cause hell, how many times do you really have to buy a capo?

Hey Crazy Fingers
Wow dude thats a very hardcore capo you got yourself:cool: I have been using a flim case that I cut the top off of so it wouldn't fall off of my fingers. I did also tried a pencil (like the ones you get for free or like the ones they give you when you go to the government office). That case I taped it to my finger then played with it. But I am sad to say I am not as hardcore as you I got sick of playing like that so I am buying a cheap capo this weekend. Well I just wanted to say that I thought your capo idea was really kick a*#.

that's funny the_doors_girl, I did the same thing with a pencil.. i make it a little over the width of the neck, and used one of those hair bands my sisters used in their hair, hooking it on one side of the pencil, then under the neck and hooking over the other side.. worked great hehehe... thanks for bringing back memories :)
