does anyone have any suggestions for substances and equipment to use when cleaning grime of fretboard and strings

For the strings, take a sheet of normal printer paper and squeeze the strings and rub them down. You will see nice black lines on the sheet. Do this to each unwound string until you get most of the grime off. Careful not to burn your fingers, I have done that, nice first degree burn! Once you get all that off use string cleaner/lubricant.
For the fretboard, next time you change strings, take all the strings off and use the same string cleaner/lubricant to to clean the fretboard. I wipe each fret down and each fret space down.

ok great, thanks alot.
but do you have any suggestions as to wat lubricant to use, ive heard "iso propyl" (not sure of spelling) is good...

Lemon oil is good for bare wood fret boards.

I just buy whatever I can find. Just as long as it's a string cleaner. If it's just an oil then it's not going to necessarily clean, which is what you want.
