Hey all,

Alot of my friends play guitar and i have got a good hang of it and enjoy it alot. I am now ready to purchase a amp and guitar. My friends always ask me a million questions like "what type of music do u want to play" I always hear them talk about amp staks and regular amps...well i have about $2,500 and i'm looking for a good guitar and amp. Any suggestions

Well it depends on what kind of playing you do (shows, bedroom playing, etc), how serious of a player you are, and how much you are comfortable to spend. I wouldn't recommend spending all 2500 on your first gear. You may like it a lot playing your friends' guitars, but you may realize that it's really not your thing. I would say get a guitar that's between 500 and 1000 dollars, and get an amp that's the same price range as well. What kind of playing are you intending to do? If you play shows or bedroom playing, it's going to be a lot different choice on the amp. For the guitar, you all know what I'm going to say... ESP:LTD, Jackson, Ibanez, BC Rich, and Washburn. They seem to have the best quality for the price. Fender builds nice stuff, but I don't feel it's worth every penny. Do not rush into this. Play guitars at guitar shops and compare them. I always say judge the FEEL over the sound. Pickups can always be changed, necks are not always changable.

The style of music you play will also better help me to recommend stuff for you to check out.

$2500 first a timer's equpment!?... personaly i think thats going a little off the deep end... but hey its your money.

There are a lot of good choises out there if your willing to spend, By the way Fender dose make a very good guitar , but single coils will buzz if your standing in front of a high power source like a TV or somthing, otherwise you'll be fine. Peavey also makes a nice guitar and amp. I only have a practice amp(peavey) and a few pedals, thats all you really need if your just playing in your house. To keep it simple more power = more money

I enjoy playing Sabbath, metallica, offspring, creed, Zepplin, godsmack...stuff like that. As far as where ill play, probrably just my room. local small parties eventually. I was kinda looking at a Gibson Tony Iommi signature with a marshall mg100rcd head and mg 412 cab. What u think...only 2 g for everything

No way, marshall MG is pretty pathetic actually. If you want a half stack for that cheap and you want a nice one... you're out of luck. I'd say get the AVT50 (perferably the 150H) and the AVT straight cab or the marshall JCM900 1960 A (or B) cab. The 1960s will make you sound a lot better than the AVT cabs.

If you like the Iommi get it. I haven't played one. I'd like to, just to see how it is. Gibson products don't really call out to me. If I'm going to buy another guitar it's gonna be a 7 string.

I don't know about the other sg's but the one i played at the music store, the gothic SG, it was a piece of garbage, there was no way I'd spend that kind of money for it. Like i said i only played the gothic, it was probably just a bad set up.

No the gothics are pretty bad. They are not worth the money at all. My rhythm guitarist has one, but he got it for 150 bucks, worth it for that price. The other SG's I've played are OK, but again not worth the price tag. I've played some very expensive les pauls that I wouldn't even consider buying even if I was loaded. If I got a really good deal on it or for free, I would turn around sell it for a profit. I want to try out an Iommi though, it would be nice to know that the construction quality of those is nicer than their other stuff.

$2500? Save it and buy some Enron stock... seriously, DON'T be talked into spending all of that to start! You can get some VERY good gear for much less, for example as far as guitars go, you can pick up a sweet Rickenbacker 650D Dakota for around $600, or a hot Squier Jagmaster (don't let people tell you everything Squier makes sucks, the Jagmaster is a great piece of gear). And unless you plan on playing stadiums soon, the most noise you need to make can be done with a terrific Pignose 60 watt all tube amp for around $350. And if you like that stuff you'll still have more than half the original $2500 to get pedals, effects, plus one or two great back up guitars too! Who needs a $2000 Gibson to play good music anyway?
