What techniques do you guys use for making riffs? I cant seem to come up with anything good.. I've been playing for a year, and all i play is hard rock stuff, like Maiden, Sabbath, DIO and Ozzy..
But i wanna write some of my own stuff..

The only truely interesting riff i came up with was when i was messing with the fast part for the song "Black Sabbath"... i came up with this:

A---------------3~---------------6--5--3----------
E-3-3-3-3--6---------3-3-3-3-------------6-------

But i cant think of ANYTHING else or how to do anything else for that matter.

I don't know if you're familiar with The Stone Roses and John Squire, but he comes up with some amazing riffs. They are usually built around a single chord shape, then add a few passing notes. A capo might help get a similar riff to sound totally different. Give it a try.

See if you can listen to their debut album (called, the stone roses). Practically every song has a killer riff to start it off.

You could also try putting your guitar into a different tuning to give you extra possibilities that weren't there before.

Well, i'm not too fond of alternate tuning myself. the only alternate tunings i even bother with are 1/2 step down or 1 1/2 step down (only to play Sabbath).
