Metal thing

What up everybody, I got a question: In STP's MTV Unplugged performance of The Big Empty I noticed the guitarist was fretting with a metal thing on his finger. I've seen this used a few other times on acoustic guitars and I wanted to know what they are.

I've only been playing for around 7 months now so please don't laugh at my ignorance :)

that's a slide

It is called a slide. They are sometimes made out of steel or glass. Notes are produced by touching the slide to the strings and not pressing down. When you pick a note and then move the slide up and down the neck you will hear a smooth transition between the notes.
