I recently had a little conflict with my friend(who plays drums) our conflict was over the meaning of tone.In Modern English tone is defined as an attitude towards something... My Friend said it goes the same for guitar(drummers...go figure). So my question is what do u think tone is?

Attitude as in tone of vioce? Different woods give different Tone but I'm sure I know exactly what it is. I don't think I could define Tone.

But then there is a thing called skin tone, and that is like the colours of the skin etc. I think tone is colouring, when you mess with your eq, you are colouring your sound IMHO. And different woods give you different tones. Woods could be tints, or shading. And pickups as well, they could be like shading, or the depth of the colour (EMG actives would be like no shading or depth)

smfulla is right- your tone is what you add to your instrument. for instance, a les pual sounds different than a fender. the tone is different.
personally- a drummer should NEVER tell a guitar player what 'tone' is! it should be vise versa! lol

Yes I think Tone in a musical sence is the 'Colouring' of a sound

Oops, in my first post I meant to say I'm NOT sure exactly what it is.
Although the "colouring" aspect makes sense.
In regard to guitar's tone, I have always said things like "rich tone" or "deep tone" or "beautiful tone." In other words, I always looked upon it as closely connected with the quality of the guitar. Of course, that tone could best be reaized by the way the guitarist played.
