What are the alternatives for attaching a guitar strap if the guitar doesn't have a peg at the bottom?

by "bottom" do you mean the end of the body closest to the bridge or the part where the neck joins the body... ?
if its closest to the bridge, you have to break out the drill and drill a small guidance hole the diameter of the shaft of the screw you will use, not including the thread... as close to the centre as you can 'cos thats where there is a thick chunk of wood inside the guitar (i assume this is an accoustic) then screw on a strap knob.
if you mean the part where the neck joins, you can either tie the other end of your strap to the head stock under the strings, or a better option, drill a hole in the heel of the guitar (the thick part of wood where the neck joins the body, same process as above, starting with the guitar upside down and drilling down in the centre of the heel towards the fret board ensuring that the drill is not too close to the edge, or too deep...1.5 - 2.0cm should be fine...
*IMPORTANT* 2 little screws with guide holes carefully drilled, is a very minor adjustment that if done properly will not effect the sound or tone of your guitar in any way,
BUT,.... do NOT go anywhere near your guitar with ANY sharp instrument at all if you are not 100% comfortable about what you are doing, and you are sure even if you totally hack it, it won't be too important... i.e. if your'e talking about your grandfather's vintage '57 Les Paul... *"put the drill down, move away from the guitar...."*

How can you be sure it's not my own Les Paul from '57? I read that when Les Paul did his act a few years ago (maybe he still does) he quipped that most people didn't know that Les Paul was a person -- they thought it was a guitar.
But back to the subject - It's that "as close to the center" (American spelling) :) that gives me a little pause. But that is what I will try to do. I assume that there is a specific "strap knob" but I may improvise on that. And I think I will attach other side under strings above the nut.
Thanks for advice.
