In order to learn how to combine the scale patterns from every mode to get one big pattern that covers the entire fretboard therefore enabling you to play in any given key you must first understand the basics.
These are the 7 "church" modes in a single position (you don't have to move your left hand up and down the frets that much).
The 1st degree (noted by a 1) is the root. Whatever note you play on the 1 determines the key of the scale. For information on keys visit cyberfret.com.

The flats (notated by a 'b' before a number) indicated after the name of each mode are very important. There is an order to them, the order of flats.
The order of flats goes as so:
Lydian (#4), Ionian/Major (0), Mixolydian (b7), Dorian (b3, b7), Aeolian/Natural Minor (b3, b6, b7), Phrygian (b2, b3, b6, b7), Locrian (b2, b3, b5, b6, b7)
Lydian is the brightest sounding, Locrian is the darkest. Lydian - Mixolydian is major, Dorian to Locrian is minor (because they have a flatted 3rd)
Notice how the flats are added in this order: 7, 3, 6, 2, 5, and that the 4th is never flatted but is infact sharpened.
Experiment with the circle of 5ths (http://www.cyberfret.com/theory/circle-of-5ths-major/index.php) and see what patterns and observations you can make. One would be that if you pick a key (let's say G), and then go 5 ahead of it you will get its 7th degree. And if you backtrack one at a time you'll get the order of flat notes you'll add to the G as you progress in the circle of 5ths.
Now that you understand a little about how the modes are different and related to each other time to go back to memorizing patterns.

Those are the modes on individual strings. Once again, the "1" is where you start at.
If you take a close look at the "Major" pattern on 1 string you will notice that it's just Root - Whole Step - Whole Step - Half Step - Whole Step - Whole Step - Whole Step - Half Step back to root. Now to each of those numbers assign a mode.
1 - Ionian
2 - Dorian
3 - Phrygian
4 - Lydian
5 - Mixolydian
6 - Aeolian
7 - Locrian
Now take the patterns of the modes in single positions, and start playing each one at it's assigned number. Voila, you have successfully created a single pattern that covers the entire fretboard in a single key. Now you can play in key... but wait... you need to memorize it first.
