To start off, you know about effects pedals. A rack is just an effect unit that is mounted in a rack. It's kinda like a shelf for your amps, effects, wireless, tuner, etc etc. A rack is great because everything can be all wired together in the rack, and you have a control pedal board that controls the whole rack. You roll the rack to where you are playing, plug in the power, connect your speakers, connect the guitar, and you're off. No more connecting up pedals, worrying about batteries and all that **** that comes along with pedals. Racks are generally more expensive than a pedalboard, but it's a lot more convienient. Here's a good example of a rack, http://www.johnpetrucci.com/images/petrucci_rig.jpg It's John Petrucci's of Dream Theater. In the right corner is the control board for it (the pedals on there that look like wah pedals are the control pedals for his wah and volume rack units). That is a great example of a rack that a pro would use. He has LOTS of stuff in it, and it's a mess to connect (thats why he has roadies :) ).

Heh heh. Yeah I know, and that's not as big as they come! These new bands that are effects freaks have HUGE racks and it is just rediculous. I personally wouldn't have too big of a rack. JP's rack is bigger than I'd probably have in my dream setup.

What about stomp boxes???

What about them... stomp box is just another name for pedal. I actually don't like having many pedals. The extent of my effect owning is a Morley Bad Horsie Wah. That's it. I am replacing my combo amp with a POD and power amp, so you can say that has however many 'pedals' in it...
If you have lots of pedals it will just destroy your guitar tone. The more processing of your signal you have, the more tone you loose. Rack units or pedals: effects kill tone.
