Do most of u use your 1st finger and thumb for finger picking 90% of the time. I find i very rarely use my other fingers and was wondering if this might ultimately limit me.

For example which fingers would u use to play:

E ----------------------------------------------------------------------
B ---3------------------3-----------------------------------------------
G -------0------0-------------0-------------------------------------
D -----------0-------------0--------------------------------------------
A ---3--------------3--------------------------------------------------
E----------------------------------------------------------------------

I would use thumb and all fingers except pinky for that (AB:thumb, third finger;G middle finger;D pointy finger and so on using the same fingers for the same strings). From the first time I started using tabs I always tried to use all my fingers and adjust them to the strings they most naturally fall on. This meant practising fingerpicking patterns over and over till all my fingers were functional. Admittedly, my little finger doesnt get the workout the others do, but I can use it if I have to. In my opinion you would be limiting your versatility - speed if you only used two fingers. Everything Ive been taught supports this idea...

I would only use my thumb on the A string, and my index and middle for the other notes. ( P&M on the A and B strings, then alternating I and M fingers).

Or....what the hell, get your thumb some practice and play everything but the B string with it. Play the B string with your M.

P= thumb
I= index
M= middle
A= ring (that is not what they stand for, but it might help you remember, in case you didn't know).

Fingerstyle ROCKS!

Have fun!
