i'm in a band with two friends. there were originaly five people in the band, two guitars, drums, bass and a singer. but the singer and bassist quit, so now my friend is on bass and i'm playing guitar and singing. i'm a chick, but i've always been a tomboy with the non girly voice and stuff. i'm not that great a singer, but i can sing in tune. but they keep telling me they can't understand me, that i should sing louder, open my mouth. but its hard to sing the low notes louder without going higher. besides at every concert i've been to, you couldn't understand the singer. even on cd's you can't understand people, that's why you read the cd booklet or look it up on the net. anywho, do i listen to them, or sing the way that comes naturally? thanx for your time

Have you heard of the indie band Sleeper? The singer (Louise Wenner) had a hushed voice - very sexy, and she played guitar... always a bonus :D
I see what you mean about not being able to understand professional singers, In the beginning I couldn't understand a single word of my favorite singers, people like, Ian Brown, Matt Bellamy, Mark Greeney, Gary Stringer, Thom Yorke, Louise Wenner and many more.
I pesonally don't really care what the words are saying, more what they sound like, ummm... does that make sense? You know, the melody, rather than the 'message'.
You could record yourself singing because it always sounds different than it does to you (because you hear your own voice as vibrations in your skull rather than as vibrations in the air) If you still like the sound of it after that, I would stick with it.
Oh well, I don't know if that was any help.
