I just woke up and read the news. I live in Columbus Ohio, so I may very well have students that were there. Our thoughts are with the families of the 5 people that were killed and the others that were injured.

I'm in total shock. Dime and Zakk Wylde were the reasons I pulled my guitar out of the closet! What a great loss to the Metal World! RIP Dimebag Darrell.

I'm speechless...I was in the lab doing work and I heard it on the radio. They didn't actually say it was Dime, just "a band member". When I checked the web I got a chill down my spine.
He will be sadly missed...a great loss for the 6-string world...
What the hell is going on with some people. Goddammit! :mad2: :mad2: :mad2:

What's tragic to me is we may never find out WHY...
WHY? WHY?
Because there are f***heads like Gale out there who just don't have anything better to do than cause suffering. I would never think that I would come to say sth like that for anyone, but I really don't have the slightest sympathy towards or desire to understand people like that...

If I'm not mistaken, it happened exactly 24 years after John Lennon was killed by a crazed fan. The metal world is feeling that pain now.

Wow this sucks. He was one of the most influential metal guitarists ever. I wan't really into his music but I always had respect for his talent and he was really on top of the metal world. :(

Hey guys, long time no see.
At first when I heard this at school from my friends I didn't beleive it at all, I thought it was some stupid rumor. Then all I heard was that, but everyone just said 'a band member'. I was hoping and praying that it wasn't Dimebag becase he is a God to me. Anyway, saw the bad news and I was almost crying, I can't beleive something like this could happen.
I also quit guitar but after listening to Coyboys From Hell after a really really long time, I'm determined to start playing again.
RIP Dimebag... you won't be forgotten.

I don't know what to say, Pantera was one of the most influential bands ever, and Dimebag Darrell was just so awesome, I couldn't believe what i heard when i first heard them, I can't believe he's dead, I'm gonna go sit and cry now, peace.
RIP Dimebag Darrell

I came back to these boards to 'share your pain' so to speak. He was a great guitarist whos life shouldnt have been cut short this early.
My thoughts are with his family and friends, and with all the guitarists that drew inspiration and love from his playing.
RIP Darrell Abbot.
This is the first really influential guitarist to die since i have picked up the guitar and the only one i have heard of dying onstage.....terrible way to go...
Dime, we salute you

yeah, died in battle.
I supposed thats a small positive that can be drawn from it. He was probably too submersed in his own music to realise what was going on or what happened before things went black.

Dont get me wrong, i love his music and metal, just please check yourself into a rehaib instituion.
You know dimebag (the name) came from his weed conection. It was because he was too poor to buy to much so he would buy 10 dollars worth, so they started calling him Dimebag.

last night i sat up with my drummer toasting the memory of Dime. Revolution Is My Name has never been as sad a song as right now...
there isnt a single grieving soul that will soon forget dime's contribution to metal, truly a pioneer of "as heavy as heavy should be". dec 8th will forever be a solemn day, with now 2 shattering blows to music on it's head. but i know that somewhere, Dime is smiling. fiery Dean ML in hand, and a wall of blazing tone as his voice, dime is smiling.

if I had my Pantera DVD here, I'd be watching it.. but sadly I brought it home over Thanksgiving when I was starting to clear out stuff for Xmas. Last night a friend and I downed some Blacktooth Grins in honor of Dime. This is one of the saddest times in metal history.
Reading some of the comments by guys like Zakk or even Phil (check out my ratbit posts) still chokes me up a little.

I remember the Lennon shooting very well! I was a NYPD Rookie back then. I transported Chapman to his "new home" in the pen where he'll rot!
There's always some looney tune running loose that should've been kept in a psychiatric hospital. City and state funding has seen fit to close the majority of these places. Some people are just plain nuts, some lose it from jealousy, others are fueled by a combination of twisted things which is a fatal combination of envy, psychosis and drugs/alcohol. The end result? TRAGEDY like this!

I heard the morning after it happened, when Dime was the only confirmed victim.
I was absolutely in shock. I broke down and cried when I heard on the radio that Dime had been shot, and maybe Vinny (thank God he wasn't), too.
I was mourning the death of John Lennon the day before, and it sent a chill down my spine to hear that it had happened again, and so close to home (I live fourty miles from Columbus).
Here's a post I made at a couple of other forums I post at that really seemed to capture many people's thoughts:
"One shred of good news is that Dimebag was the only member of the band who was hurt.
It weird, though, because I just heard a Damageplan song on the radio, and I couldn't help breaking into tears -- and they were as much tears of anger as they were tears of grief.
I'm extremely angry that somebody would dig to the very depths of humanity to kill someone over ****ing music.
I was talking with some people who had friends who knew the shooter (I live about an hour from Marysville, Ohio, Hale's hometown), and they said that it is suspected that Hale thought Pantera stole some lyrics that we wrote and used them in one of their songs. This is obviously false, but apparently this dude was a discharged Marine and had some emotional problems.
...So he shot Dime over some ****in' lyrics that never exsisted.
...I can't even think about it anymore without feeling a fireball of rage ignite in my stomach. This **** needs to be stopped before anymore musicians are senselessly killed.
First Lennon, then Dime. It doesn't matter how many damn years they are apart, who the ****'s next? David Lee Roth and George Harrison have both been attacked in their homes -- their ****ing homes!
Is this what society is -- killers and attackers and loathers? I think it's a question more people need to start asking, and something, I don't know what, but for God's sake something needs to be done."

there is no doubt that phil is indirectly to blame for dimes death but im pretty sure that his feelings would be genuine, being in a band with someone for that long, your bound to be shocked when this happens. dime said that he loved phil like a brother and apparently phil said the same, even after all the **** talking from both sides (mainly phils) so it would definately be pretty sad for phil.
