Please help.

I play Metal Rhythm (yay!) guitar.

I love the Huge, Heavy Riffs that Maiden etc play...

Problem is - I'm getting stuck with coming-up with new ones.

Any one got any suggestions?

Listen to different music. Get exsposed to lots of styles and incorperate them into your playing. You like maiden, so listen to pantera, or a different style heavy band. Look at tabs of different bands and get an idea of what they do for a heavy sound. Try different tunings, palm muting, pinch harmonics. All of these things can make a riff sound heavy.

Yeah, thats the problem - I listen to ALL metal, ALL the time ------- Iron Maiden was just an example.

I detuned to get a thundery sound on every string - sounds real dark and heavy.

No matter what i try to do - it comes out like what i learnt before - guess my imagination and inspiration has dried up.

Darn!

Thanks though

Well, try listening to some blues and jazz. Try some Dream Theater if you haven't already. I recommend their song A Change of Seasons. It's a 20 minute song, but it's really good.

Ok, well, im not sure what your doing already since i dont listen to much metal, but here are some ideas.

Instead of using a standard chord progression like 1-6-4-5, use a progression with a lot of chromatic intervals. These progressions usually have a darker, more sinister sound than the standard ones.

strum or arpeggiate different ornamented minor chords.

thats really all i can think of. well, good luck.
