Who else is from the era of guitar virtiosos? I mean who else has

started playing around 1983 and has spent their whole life
mastering the vai/satriani/malmsteen/macalpine school of
guitar playing. Ive never been in a band and have been a closet
shredder,Ive spent all my practice on speed dexterity and riffs.
I think its just sad that now that i have the ability to play this stuff its been uncool for over a decade. Anyone else relate?

man, i'm just like you, except i was born in 1982, and have only been playin for a year and a half, but i play all that **** to man, and yeah, all i spend my time on is speed dexterity and riffs to, oh and writing my own music. It's kinda weird cause i grew up in the 90's and hate 90's music, and love the old shredder dudes from the 80s. I guess i just recognize their talent unlike most people. Their the ones that inspired me to play, the first time i heard Satriani i bought a guitar an hour later (not jokin). then i got to John Petrucci, and he inspired me to practice my alternate picking like a mad man :) i have no influences from the 90's, or the 2000's. You look at my cd collection and all you see is 80's rock and shredders.

dude shredding may be uncool for the radio stations, but their **** anyway, tons of people like shred man, i've played for many people and they all say, holy ****, how does he do that. People are probably the same way with you. You just gotta find the right crowd. Oh and don't shred to impress girls man, girls like bad guitar players like green day and blink 1285682882 and **** :) hehehe.

but i gotta say that starting a band when your a shredder can be a challenge, i haven't met anyone who wants to play my type of music, they just want power cords, ****ty solo's and want to play 90's crunge crap, YUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BRING BACK THY SHRED. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA :)

thanx black star for the kind words about the 80s shred.
Did you say youve playing a year and a half and can already
play the malmsteen satch stuff? If so you are definately blessed.
I thought i was the **** just knowing how to play the
were not gonna take it solo back then.Of course over the years
my influences have definately changed.I have listened to just
about every great player you can think of in the rock genrea.I
think you can seperate great players in 2 categories, which i like
equally well. 1st categorie- technical genius and 2nd content genius. As far as technical goes there are probably about 10-15
guitarist i would put in there. These are players with jaw dropping
speed, bag o tricks monsters.on the other side you have players
that can do the same stuff as the tech genius but chooses to
play more reserved and melodic. My favorites in this categorie are JOE SATRIANI ERIC JOHNSON NEAL SCHON.

you mentioned john petrucci before and its kinda funny because
I think he is probably the last true guitar god of the shred era
They came out around 92 i think and thats about when shredding
lost any steam it had left. Hes a definate Icon

dude, you rock :)

yeah i love John Petrucci, he's my fav probably, and my second fav is Satch, he writes the best ****in songs ever!!!!!! He is the God of melodies, and he's frickin fast as well. I wish I could do legato runs like that, i should practice them more i guess, :) i just do those alternate picking runs, but there cool, i like em :)

so yeah my influences are mainly Satch and Petrucci, and Malmsteen for his unbelievable speed, but that's it, he's got some cool riffs, and i really love the song Black Star, hence my nickname :)

you mentioned i was blessed, haha, i don't know man everybody says that, but i think it's just hard work and devotion, everyone can play that stuff if they tried hard enough and were motivated enough. To be honest i will always think i suck becasue i know i can always do better, and that there is always more to learn and there are people out there that could kick my ass at the guitar, so that keeps my ego down to nill :)

Oh by the way, what kinda guitar you got man? My first guitar was a peavy raptor, it's a killer beginner guitar man, i still got it :) but now i play a G&L, ooooooohhhhhhhhh how sweet it is my friend, it's a strat model, their awesome guitars, and a fairly recent model, have you heard of em? if you go to arbutusmusic.com you can see a pic of mine there, it's called the S-500, although the paint job in the pic is not the same as mine, but the rest is.

cya :)

eah dude, i tried to find satch's dvd today, but i only found the vhs, but i bought it anyway, but i will get the dvd to :) What's on the dvd besides the songs?

yeah dude get msn, it's a chat line over the net. We could talk to each other man. go to msn.com and type in the search part (it's got a little magnifying glass next to it) msn messanger. It will then bring you to a series of links, click on the first one and you'll be able to download it first, but before you use it you need an email at hotmail.com, so go there and get an email account first, unless you already have one.

PS, that's a nice guitar man, although i hate floating bridges :) oh well, that's just me :)

such as satch-gary hoey malmsteen neal schon and others.

Black Star
04-08-2002, 12:21 AM
cool rob :) that's awesome. Is your playing style more along the lines of satch? bvy that i mean, legato type stuff?

satch
04-08-2002, 06:01 AM
I do play alot of lagato since satch is my favorite guitarist. But
here lately its been mostly staccato such as malmsteen.I was
trying to play his stuff yesterday and i just cant do it.Its been so
long since i tried his stuff.I mean that when it comes to speed and technique, i think im proly as good as youll find but my note
placement and timing could use a lot of work.Right now im kinda
in a rut.Ive been studying music theory for 5 yrs now and playing
guitar for 18yrs and just cant get a handle on matching my
music knowledge with my skill.I think that since i play so fast and
so many notes my brain cannot catch up,i should have started theory a lot sooner. How bout you?

Black Star
04-08-2002, 04:28 PM
well its wierd man. I went away for 4 days, came back, and could not alternate pick at all, i still can't and it's been 2 days, i don't know what the hell is wrong, so i've started working on legato now adn it's commin along well, it's been a while since i've done it, but by the end of the week i'll have it.

I guess if i keep up this legato thing (which is really cool) i'll sound maybe like a cross between george lynch, reb beach, and joe satch. I love all of their guitar work. But satch is my favorite player as well. But i hope to write songs that don't come out sounding like an exact copy, and so far i haven't.

Oh and about the theory thing. I went to music school and it killed my inspiration to play guitar, i learned theory, yeah, but after my first year i dropped out of music school, and didn't wanna touch my guitar. In fact i barely played in the program. It really killed my playing. And now i can play better than i could before, but my theory sucks now. My freind knows a lot of theory so i'll probably take lessons from him.

Oh, and yes, malmsteen is ****ing hard :)

cool george lynch is still an influence in my playing.I actually got to meet LYNCH MOB back in 92 when they played with WARRANT at the bronco bowl in dallas texas. I got to ask george lynch for an autographed pick and lp cover which i still have.He was really down to earth and i told him one day ill be able to play MR SCARY. HE LOOKED AT ME AND SAID yeah one day i will too!!!HAHA humble guy. That reminds me i forgot to tell you the things im playing on the tape i sent ya.
the ones i remember.
Satch boogie summer song midnight always with you always with me barogue tears in the rain
eruption in my dreams W/ solo lots of cromatic shredding
shedding skin master of puppets/solo.

on another note. Ive got some kick ass ol school vhs lessons
from tony macalpine steve lukeather and a live malmsteen
excellent to learn from and also get discouraged from.

:D

I'm very happy to announce that i can alternate pick again, no prob, phew i was worried there for a minute :)

yeah lynch rules, i love that guy, Mr. Scary is an awesome song. That's really cool that you met him man. Have you met any other guitarists?

the tape sounds cool man, can't wait. Did you put any of your own stuff on there?

yeah, i picked up some malmsteen instructional vids myself, i have the first two volumes and will probably pick up the 3rd tomorrow. it's insanely hard to do it as fast as that guy man, jesus hes' good :) i wanted to break his fingers after seeing the video :D in one of your malmsteen vids does he play with his teeth? just checking to see if we have the same one. Do you think you could tape some footage and send it to?

Black Star

hows' your sweep picking man. I'm finding it fairly difficult, not impossible, but hard. damn :)

satch
04-09-2002, 06:05 AM
lets see Ive met richie kotzen, andy timmons from danger danger
and ive seen joe satriani in concert 2 times.I can sweep pick pretty good i guess,i was working on the sweep in the solo crushing day from surfing w/ alien. As far as the tape i made i did
put in a couple of tracks w/2 guitars i made but they suck.I just
cant write anything good.I guess im like everyone else who goes
into guitar center and just noodles around with riffs and licks.
I find i just dont have the patience or the time anymore to sit down and write really good songs that wont see the light of day anyway. As long as i can hold my own in the speed clean and wow department im satisfied.call me a showoff im a bastard.
Ive got 2 vcrs but 1 isnt very good so i dont know if the copy of vhs will work, ill check into it.The malmsteen i have is called
rising force live 85 it has a blue cover and him playing his cream strat on stage. :D
