What the hell is that tunnel thing that ends/has an an opening at the end of the bridge and beginning of the headstock? Why doesn't my guitar have one? Is this good or bad?

EDIT: Bridge=neck of course...

Are you talking about the truss rod? What kind of guitar do you have? Some guitars just don't have trusses which is pretty cheap. Other guitars in order to adjust the truss you have to completely take the neck off. So it looks like the guitar has no truss when in fact it does.

I am talking about the hole that is in the headstock and it looks as though it goes into the neck, sorta like a tunnel. I just noticed that my Squier has a small hole, hmmm, didn't see it before... anyway the Yamaha I was playing in a shop had a bigger gaping hole... What does it do? What is it for?

i have one too, i think its just a metal rod inside the neck that gives the neck some support.

you shouldnt worry about it anyway.

Just an addition to that, the hole is there so you can adjust it with an allen wrench to correct curvature in the neck.

In some guitars the truss rod adjustment is at the other end of the neck, so you may not see a hole at the top of some axes.

This is the neck adjustment and you SHOULD worry about it!

This allows you to keep the neck shaped for good action with little or know buzz.

Most here probally adjust thier own necks, not a problem. I get my necks adjusted for free where I bought my guitars. But you can take it to any music store and pay a few bucks to have them adjust the neck and set up the action the way you like it.

When the weather changes, which is every 5 minutes in South Carolina, the neck wood will adjust to the moisture in the air and change its shape. That's where this truss rod works in.

Don't buy any guitar without one!

Peace!
