It's where you lightly touch the string near the bridge with the side of your picking hand to get a muffled sound of the note you're fretting, the only thing I could compare it to is playing with a pillow over the speaker grille.

Palm muting is a very popular thing to do. It's simply resting your hand on the bridge. Your palm touches the strings and gives them a muted sound. Palm muting is a style that takes time to master. I remember struggling with palm muting back in the day. Now it's all I do pretty much. :) It takes practice to get it to sound right.

Definately work on palm muting! Also experiment with releasing the fret fingers lightly to get a different muting sound. These techniques really bring out a great bottom end.
Peace!
This come in really handy when you play any kind of metall at all. When you get really good at it, you can use palm muting rythems to accent the beat that the drummer is playing. e.g. Fear Factory, Slipknot, Disturbed. Palm muting is a major hurdle to overcome and perfect.

In my opinion, palm muting isn't that hard to learn.
I only had trouble with it when I had to palm mute for a while.
It will take a couple weeks until your wrist gets used to the action.
