At the risk of letting you all know how ignorant I am regarding guitarists, I have a question of my own: who is Kirk Hammet, and what did he do?

He's Metallica's lead guitarist and King of the crappy wah solo.

agreed, the only reason he uses the wah so much is becasue you can use it as a filter so nobody hears your mistakes, and we all know hammett sucks so that's why he uses the wah.
I HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE The frickin WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
there, that's better :)
come on now! thats soooo uncalled for.
you all love at least one of his solos.
come on, ride the lightning, humaaazing solo, and creeping death...phwa...all the kill em all solos.
im not a fan of wah myself, but jesus, you people are so harsh!

All the Kill 'Em All solos were written by Dave Mustaine FYI.
I also noticed that the second solo in Ride The Lightning sounds EXACTLY like the keyboard solo in the Highway Star by Deep Purple, not that I'm hinting at anything of course. :D
I think if you compare him to an average guitarist then yes, he has a very good grasp of technique but he's touted as being in the same league as the 80s shredders and he's not on the same plain as they are.

Hmmmmm, lets's see. Kirk Hammet as a bad guitar player.....
How much money did I make on playing the guitar....... $0,00
How much money did Kirk make by playing the guitar... $hell, I wouldn't even start counting, I have to go to bed in Eight hours. Probably a lot of people who must think he is a good player.
Anyway, my point is, that opinions vary. I think the solos by metallica are way cool. even thought they are written by James. Second point is that a solo isn't the only thing alive in a song. a song is the interaction between all the band members, and I think that's what made the succes in the whole Metallica scenery.

mllebois listen to F-ART cause he is SMART! Come on guys, can any of you play as good? He's a GOOD guitar player! Maybe not the best but he knows how to treat a guitar.
mllebois-Listen to his playing and make up your own mind (but youre not THAT interested anyway are you?).:D hehe
I love kirk...
WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE!? I go away for a few days and you start complaining about hammett. What's wrong with him? He exception speed and skill, good knowledge of music theory (which is evident in his work) and knows how to work a crowd.
BTW, Metallica released 'Kill em all' in 1983, wouldn't that make Hammett one of the before named '80s shredders'?

Wel,, depspite the fact that I love metallica. I was looking over some vids again of Ingwy Malmstein and Steve Vai,, but I must say that Kirk has a lack of speed compared to them. But then again, who am I to say...

Not really, I feel that he's mistakenly compared to them. Players like Malmsteen and Satriani were basically exhibtion guitarists who's records were purely to demonstrate their skill whereas Kirk is the lead guitarist of a metal band. He's not really a technique orientated player and his solos are part of actual songs instead of virtuouso pieces but people still compare him to shredders which I think is both irrelevant and unfair.

well my opinion on Kirk has changed since my last post about him. I htink he has the potential to be way better than he is, coz right now he's not that great.
Oh btw, the KEA solos aren't exactly the same as the ones dave wrote, Kirk changed them abit.
ah well - but it would be easy to get their old sound with the EMG's yea?
SORRY - wrong post - was meant for another thread..
:o
Well you could have just deleted it, lol ;)
i tried but i couldnt, im so useless with this thing!
Does anybody know where i can get hold of KEA with the solos that dave wrote?

Amazon used to sell a bootleg of a live concert with Dave on lead called "Bay Area Thrashers", I'm sure they were being sued over it but it's worth seeing if it's still available.

yup, I have it. Two times. The one they're selling now is the re-issued one. I also have it from way back with a whole interview on it with the band. It s kinda fun to hear it. (even I sound better :-) )
Damn! I saw a copy of that in shop in Sydney about 5 years back, but i didn't have money on me to get it :(

Kirk plays within the parameters given to him by Metallica.
When he came in to do some playing for the EchoBrain album (Jason Newsted's new group www.echobrain.com) he was given free-rein.
Kirk not only studied with Satch, in the last few years on his off-time has audited jazz and other college music classes in and around San Francisco.
