question about A major chord

When I play the A major chord, my index finger, like it should, goes on the 2nd fret 4th string. however, my finger comfortably presses down on end of the fret closest to the tuning pegs. When I try to play the chord, this note doesn't sound becaue it's all the way at that end. Plus in the pictures I've seen everyone does it the same way as me but the 4th string isn't sounding. Please help!

You want to barre your 1st finger across the 4th, 3rd and 2nd strings just to the left of the 2nd fret bar. From what I understand of your question, it sounds like you may be too far back in the fret.
