I currently do my home recording in my brother's room, on a computer with GoldWave. Is this the right approach? Any tips, or general advice?

I'm not the most familiar with computer recording at all. It depends on what kind of I/O interface you've got in the computer, and your personal abilities with the software.

If you'd like a different approach, check out mixers with recorders built in. My personal favorite would have to go to the Yamaha MD-8. It's a 12 track mixer (8 mono, 2 stereo) and an 8 track recorder. It records to data mini-disc (8 track) and it also records to stereo mini discs as well. You get about 20 minutes continuous recording per disc with 8 tracks. The really nice thing about it is you can bounce tracks down... VERY HANDY with drums!!! It's digital, so you get CD quality sound. It's also pretty small, so you can tote it around. It's so full of features that the book is close to 200 pages long. As mixers go, it's very simple to use, and it's just over 1000 bucks. You really can't beat that!

er.. i don't really have 1000 bucks to go and blow on a recorder, or anything else for that matter. In fact, as far as money goes, i'm not really gunna have much to spend on that stuff fer quite awhile. That's why I use GoldWave. 'tis free. :D It kinda messes up the vocals, but i've heard that most recording programs do that. is there a way to avoid it?

I've never heard of that happening... So I can't tell you why it happens or what happens. I have a feeling it's a hardware issue though.

It just makes all of the vocals lower pitched, or sometimes higher pitched. I don't think it's hardware, 'cause I tried on my friends computer, and it's got the best of the best, but it did the same thing. I've also tried a few other recording programs, and they did the same thing.
