In the not so distant past, there was not Internet tablature. There where no tablature books. If you wanted to learn a solo, you sat down with the record and you would play a part over and over again and try and figure out what was happening. Training your ear is one of the most important aspects of playing. Internet tablature and tab books are a great resource. But I will also say that I think it is making the younger generation of players a little lazy. I have students who I ask to figure out a song during the week. they spent 15 minutes trying, then give up and look at the tab (which is probably wrong anyway). The first solo that I figured out was Deep Purple as well....it was you guessed it, Smoke on the Water. But I sat down for hours at a time for days listening for one note at a time, until I got it.
Here is the first couple of phrases to "Maybe I'm a Leo". This will get you started. Now try and pick out one or 2 notes at a time for the rest of the solo. The answer is no I will not figure out the rest for you no matter how many times you say please :) You need to pay your dues figuring this kind of thing out yourself.

A note to all. If you want to learn a song, try to first figure it out by ear. When you first start out, tabs are a great way to learn some songs quickly. But once you have been playing for 6 months, start to learn songs by ear. It is a slow and painful process at first. But if you want to play the guitar, you need to have the ability to learn by ear. Here is a basic lesson to get you started.

Sounds good does the 1st part .But don't you think it's unfair to ask a completely useless guitar player who's been playing for 4 1/2 months and compose his own riffs to decode RItchie Blackmore's solo ??Boohoo!!!!

Shawn, thanks for transcribing the first part of that solo for me!.....and the advice. I will start to work more on figuring out songs by ear so that someday I will be able to learn a solo like this on my own.
...................you are welcome..............
