Start with learning these 5 basic scale forms.

Brian May uses major, minor, pentatonic, harmonic minor, different modes. So to nail it down to a few select scales would really not be accurate.
Take a look at the scales section here at Cyberfret.com for more scale form to add to your arsenal.

diatonic mode is pretty good.
Im currently acquainting myself with the patterns for the various modes at the moment. You mentioned 'diatonic' as a mode? While I've heard that word before, from what I can see on this website and others, that is not on the list of 'modes', such as Dorian, Phyrigian, Lydian, Mixolydian, and Locrian. Any explanations would be appreciated ;)

o im sorry ... its not a mode. its sorta like the pentatonic. the "penta" means "five" and the "tonic" means "tones". so pentatonic means "five tones".in diatonic "dia" means "seven" and of course u know "tonic". so you use all seven tones of a major scale but you ascend and descend the strings with only 3 notes on each string.
Aminor "Three-string Diatonic"
