putting guitar to lyrics??? help?

How does a band go about putting down guitar to lyrics that have been written? I am new here but id love to know how to help my band move from song writing to actually having a song. u know?

I'll come up with some kind of melody for the lyrics to be sung, and play around until I find something on the guitar that sounds good together. If I'm stuck on a melody, I'll play some guitar pieces that don't have lyrics yet and read the lyrics to find something that might match.
