Can anyone tell me that by attaching a magnetic pickup to my acoustic guitar and plugging it into an amp, can I get the sound of an electric guitar?

The idea of the acoustic pickup is just to amplify the sound of your acoustic guitar (so that it still retains that clean acoustic sound). If you put distortion on it, it will sound like crap (Ive tried). A solid body electirc is, naturally, made for being plugged in and has various options, depending on the type of guitar, as to how you can 'electrify' 'amplify' your sound. So, basically, no. If youre playing at home, an amp for your acoustic is, in my opinion, completely a waste of money. An acoustic is an insturment perfectly made to fill a room - and its just great to hear a good acoustic (played well I suppose) do that.:)

Pickup to pickup the results will vary. All I know is that whatever pickup james hetfield used on S&M on nothing else matters didn't sound like an acoustic when the distortion was kicked on when he soloed! If you get an acoustic pickup, like the seymour duncan woody, it's not going to sound like an electric guitar. It's going to sound like an acoustic played through a pickup. Which is really a nice sound. I may get a piezo pickup for my solid body electric to get that 'acoustic through a pickup' sound. But, if you want an electric sound, best thing to do is get an electric.
