...well there's a world of options out there, but if i were you i would start with anything by stevie ray vaughn... this guy had every shred of guitar mastery that everyone praises people like vai and satriani for and then some... except unlike those clinical robotic style guitar virtuosos SRV played from the heart, like hendrix he doesn't even seem to "play guitar", his soul just pours out through his hands and his battered '59 strat...
...try these...
little wing (hendrix cover)
cold shot
tin pan alley
life by the drop
texas flood
pride and joy
stormy monday (with muddy waters)
and check out the el mocombo video...

also you could look into some of the blues masters... jimi hendrix, bb king, muddy waters, john lee hooker, buddy guy...

as for jazz, i don't know that much about it, but i listen to a lot of charles mingus... you could try that...

...i hope you enjoy it...

..took a listen to "redshift" since i'm always interested in stuff i havent heard before and ...well... ...er... ...ah... whatever that is, it sure aint the blues, and it's definately a long shot from jazz... ...also the guitar work is...uninspirational... to say the least... ...$0.02 added...

as far as blues go, John Lee Hooker is and always will be the master.

You might give an ear to Albert Collins. He was one of those guys that could say more with one note than most can say with 20.

You might dig Johnny Winter. He's got more flash than most Blues guys.

Good post. I would add Albert King as a must listen to for blues. He influenced SRV and so many others. Albert Collins also is essential. For jazz you might wanna try Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Django Reinhart, George Benson, Scott Henderson, Charlie Christian or some of Jeff Beck's stuff. All these guys are great at thier art and should be studied by anyone wanting to learn the jazz and blues styles.

this has nothing to do with blues or jazz but why does EVERYONE say thats my 2 cents. Ive never heard anyone say that in my life till i started on cyberfret, you guys use it so much i acually said it to my friend.

I think it's a thing Americans say, it means "in my opinion" or something, y'know like "a penny for your thoughts", only 2 cents is 2 pennies... and in the case of Eminem his "two cents is free"...penny for my thoughts on the American education system then.

gosh dang it...everyone pickin on the americans today i guess!
well...even tho im sure mr b has some valid points...is it ok if i ask that we dont go there ? way back in sept 2001 we all kinda agreed/dropped any debates or arguments over ripping on each others countries...cuz we dont wanna see a great place like cyberfret fall prey/get trashed over peoples opinions that have nothing to do with music....

anyways....yeah....my two cents is just....someone throwing in their opinion...two cents aint worth much and neither are opinions...but still nice to have sometimes...

Its been around for awhile but i dont know many people that use it verbally... it seems to have evolved into an internet thing more than a verbal thing. On the other hand I was actually talking to someone the other day who instead of doing the standard "haha" chuckle actually said "lol". He pronounced it just like its spelled... what is this world coming to. Next thing you know we will see books written in internet shorthand.

Ive said lol once too *embarressed* im on MSN the whole time, its not my fault!

jaytee

@ohz....i suspect not many 13 year olds say "just my two cents" or even "in my opinion"....but adults do quite frequently....in my neck of the woods anyways...

@fizz+suppa....me too! when i used to chat alot...when i was talking to my husband or the inlaws sometimes id *think* "lol"...and then hope i didnt say it out loud...cuz they wouldnt know what the heck it meant and id be so embarrassed!

no not at all ohz...its perfectly fine to be 13...and...quite actually...im glad you have the opportunity to pursue your musical interests at a young age...and share them here with us....
i just think you jumped the gun a bit when you said "nobody" says that cuz i hear it alot...it could be your age...it could be where you live...but theres probably a reason why the people you spend most your time with dont use that phrase...so...no...really maybe you never have heard it before...not a big deal really....dont worry...theres nothing to make fun of...sorry if it sounded that way...wasnt meant to be taken like that...

i dont know which guitar forums youve looked at on the internet...but some of them are really awful....and i wouldnt want you to think cyberfret is like that too.....we really prefer this to stay a clean forum where people get along and enjoy their time here....so....no worries! were friendly round these parts :)

HEY!! I've said "my two cents" before... haha... Nobody mentioned Led Zeppelin, a blues infulenced band that practicly created heavy metal back in '67 and '68. Try songs like Whole Lotta Love, You Shook Me, and Dazed and Confused.

I think that is all fine but all of you seem to forget about the old British school of blues and among them about the best(according to all black blues musicians) white blues player Mr. ERIC CLAPTON. I advise you to check him out firs before you set out on any further blues exploartion. Plus he also has quite a few rock songs up his sleeve...

Here is my 2 cents ;)

For blues or Jazz Derek Trucks is cool and he is only young, check out the cover of robert johnsons 32-20 blues he did with a band called Goverment Mule, sounds superb.

Jeff Beck is good as well but im sure you know of him. Some old blues people to try are Blind Lemon Jefferson, Elmore James and i like Mississippi John Hurt as well.

Oh yeah one last one i like Duane Allman (sp) version of Going Down Slow.

And as someone mentioned it, americans aye...... ;)

jaytee
01-04-2003, 02:02 PM
isnt derek trucks duane allmans nephew? didnt he spend some time playing with the allman brothers?

i keep seeing him and hearing awesome stuff about him but havent had a chance to hear his stuff....i should prolly look into that eh?

i know he endorsed the washburn idol....such a pretty guitar
;) i was pretty happy to see someone so talked about like him pick it up...considering i own one...lol...altho mine is the simplest version....its really nice!

fretfire

Derek Trucks is the nephew of Butch Trucks, the Allman Brothers Band's drummer, and yes he does play with the Allman Brothers.

there are alot of good blues players mentioned here, but if you really want to study the blues you should listen to people like b.b.king john lee hooker and of course robert johnson also get some books on the blues
see most of the blues came out of chicago after the slaves were set free that is ware alot of them went and started to play in night clubs times were hard for the blacks then. hard to get a job could'nt pay the bills and just becomeing a free person so they were aloud to have places where they could get together and party and they sang the blues, alot of the people mentioned in this post may play blues but in all honest they don't know nothing about the blues, the little old black man liveing in a shack along side the mississippi river he'll play the blues and make you cry.

ther's my two cents

listen to some Django Reindhart for jazz, he is really good, but it's really hard
Eric clapton - Running on faith for blues

karlos sultana

i've gotta agree that CLAPTON rocks.
just bought 'unplugged' on dvd and ok he's not
shredtastic, but that old acoustic sure does
talk sweetly. throw the rule book out of the window.
i'm gonna use the techniques that make the best sound
and if means playing solos fingerstyle with no pick
then so be it. if it's good enuff for eric then who am
i to argue? buy the dvd, learn from one of the masters
and enjoy playing your geetar. nuff said.:)

For metal to the blues, you gotta go with Cream. Huge influence on those genres and everything in between.
