Pluck and Strum for Same Song

Hello,

This is my first year playing the guitar and I've noticed at some performances that people can use a pick at the same time that they pluck. Is there a technique to doing this? Do you use the pick for the base strings and pluck the higher strings with your fingers? Does anybody ever hold the pick with their fingers and pluck with their thumb?

I use that technique a lot of the time, especially when I am playing jazz. My pick will pay the lowest note, and my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th fingers will pluck the upper 3 notes in a chord. As far as holding the pick with your fingers and plucking with your thumb, I have never seen anyone do that. You really wouldn't have any control.
