just play and the more you play the more ideas will come to you

you just gotta keep playing, and let the music flow out of you.... dont sit down and say i want to write a song about x... you just gotta sit down.. and play away.. it also helps to have a good ear and play with other people

don't forget that songs are stories, and stories don't have to be about the person writing them. lots of songs are observations of what the artist sees around him/her. Neil Young, Green Day, Metallica... almost every genre has songs in it that are stories about other people. do like i, and a lot of, people did. wherever you go, whatever you're doing, watch people go about their business. invent what they're doing, imagine what they're saying and how they feel. if you don't have a problem being public, you could even sit around at a park, or on the sidewalk, playing as you watch people. think of what could be going on in their personal lives as you play music. it's a lot of fun and i've had some of my best songs come out of that. :D

you might feel a bit like a peeping tom... just keep it clean. ;)

thanks, yall make some really good points...it is just kind of frustrating sometimes, but i totally agree with the point that i just have to let it flow out of me and i guess that comes out of experiance. i also like the idea of watching other people in public, that is a great idea!

you dont have to have your guitar in front of you when you think of stuff to play, when im in class i always think of good ideas (i do that instead of paying attention) and then when i get back to my house, i try to recreate what i thought of on my guitar

just walk down the street or turn on the news. constantly place yourself in other peoples shoes. it's right outside your front door. oh yea, carry a pad and pen everywhere. i hate losing a good idea. good luck!!

I doubt this will help you much if you want to play country (or maybe it will  ), but once in a while I like to write a short story or visualize a series of events then attempt to set music to it. It can be pretty hard, but it's fun, nonetheless.

If this is mostly about lyrics, I may not be able to help much since I only write lyrics on rare occasions, but this may apply anyhow.

Write music all the time, just sit and start writting stuff, it doesn't have to be good, not everything you write will make it past your own judgement on it, but once you start writting, you'll begin to learn what works for you and what doesn't, the more you do it, the better you'll get. And I think you'll be suprised at how quickly it starts to work itself out, I know I was.

My best advice would be to listen to as much music styles/techniques as possible. It's amazing how much you can pick up and learn to blend into your own individual style of music. Good luck! :D
