all you need is a four track and a decent mic, i dont like recording on computers cause its a hassle to pull up the program and then it freezes or crashes and its kind of annoying

i four track has one function, record, thats why i like it

If you can find a minidisc player that has a line-in jack I'd recommend that to start out with. All you gotta do is plug a mic into the MD player / recorder and you're set. It's portable so you can carry it around with you anywhere. You can also store sessions on different discs. And it's all digital, so if you want to transfer it to a computer you can do so without losing any quality. I'm sure there's also a way to record using an ipod as well.

If you want to do some recording directly on your computer try looking into a new sound card that comes with a little break-out box that has little inputs for mics and amps. Creative Labs platinum cards are probably the easiest ones to find and they work alright (I had a CL Live! 5.1 Platinum a few years ago.. now I'm on a mac). Also you get what you pay for... if you get a cheap sound card don't expect to be able to monitor your own guitar and vocals. Though you'd be suprised what you can get for cheap these days.

ive gone the mindisk route, not worth it its not designed to be a recorder like that and its better to het a 4 track for the same amout of cash and actually gget to expiriment with it
