Hey guys, this is my first post to these boards. I've been an avid reader and user of cyberfret for quite some time now though. I'm a heavy theory freak, needed to ask someone with more experience in analyzing scales of music. Here's the introduction to the song "Just a phase" by Incubus.

E----------------------------------2
B----------------------------------3
G-------0-----6---4-0----0---------4 intro
D------0-0------7----0h2---0----2--4
A --0-4----------------------0-2-2-2
E -0--------------------------------

I analyzed all of the notes, and it looks a whole heck of a lot like an E minor Pentatonic scale, namely E G A B D, however there is also a C# thrown in for flavor, its not a Blues scale in E minor either, since that would have an A# thrown in, not a C#, is this just a random touch of style or is there some other slight modified scale that matches? Your help is appreciated guys.

Sincerely,
'Chris

I would say a B minor scale (B C# D E F# G A B). An E minor pentatonic scale has the notes (E G A B D E). So the B minor scale shares those 5 notes. You could also think of it as an E Dorian. E Dorian and B minor share the same notes, but you are just thinking of E as the root....the first note in the song. Calling it B minor is in relationship to the resolution chord, which is Bm.

The final chord in my posted tab of the intro. Its a Bm ;) Hence a resolution for the intro.

Shawn: Thanks for the info, when I've got some spare time, i'll investigate the E Dorian mode further, definitely is cool to be able to analyze great music, leads towards creating great music :)

Oh also just realized you could say that intro uses a G Lydian ;) So many scales!!! ahhh

G Lydian Scale = G A B C# D E F#
