View Full Version : Rhythm guitar lessons?

After a rather heated argument with a much younger guitarist. I have come to think that the whole art of rhythm guitar is over looked by younger guitarists. I know that playing rhythm guitar is every bit as complex, difficult and interesting as playing lead, if not more so.
I have several ideas about writing a couple of lessons about playing quality rhythm guitar. Before I write this stuff down, would anyone be interested in reading it.
some headers I was thinking about covering was things like strumming (horn stabs, skanking, flail... ), who/how to lock into, how to play in a band (how to leave room for others and not get lost), how set up your gear... things like that.
I was thinking about calling it "Rhythm Guitar... Beyond Chugga Chugga"
would anyone be interested?

I actually like playing rhythm guitar, so I'd definitely read it.
Yeah, that would be cool. Keeping a steady groove is 100X more inportant than a wicked lead, a solo is meaningless without a groove...

about time someone posted some rythm guitar lessons it is incredibly hard to teach yourself rythm guitar with lead guitar lessons so please please please post some lessons and if you could make sure to put some theory in them to so people understand why chord ii and V7 sound like they do together

its amazing how little credit guys like malcolm young get. rythm is so hard to get good. ive been trying to mock malcolms style by watching the dvd "live at donnignton", and its harder than to learn any solo. thatd be great man, cant wait to see it.

Definitly post it! I couldn't agree with you more, it's just as hard to play rhythm cleanly, fast and with good feel as lead guitar is. And I also agree that great rhythm players get lost in the background compared to lead guitarists. A while back I asked my bassist whether or not they thought another player was good and he responded with "well, he's a rhythm guitarist". I asked whether or not he was a good player not whether or not he played rhythm or lead.

Definitly! how many rhythm guitar lessons are on this site. not many. I think beginners need that more that the lead parts. I think they are all trying to progress way to fast and are going to miss the important things. like rhythm! Hurry up with it man!

im more skilled as a lead guitarist, as thats been my focus since i started playing... however, im sure that having a better understanding of rhythm guitar technique will allow me to be a better lead player as well... im anxious to read the lesson, peace

will you be posting them all together, or can we get little sneak peaks; ya' know, see stuff as you finish it? please? PRETTY PLEASE :D ?
i especially like the part about playing with other pieces. a lot of rhythm guitarists don't know that they shouldn't just play the EXACT same notes as the bass NOTE for NOTE, EVERY TIME...

I could definitely use the help, strumming gives me problems, and there are some wicked rhythm techniques in a bunch of songs that I want to learn.

a rhythm lesson would be good, but rhythm is not harder than lead.
someone had to say it.

Good rhythm work is just as hard as lead, and more important in the context of a song...
I'm willing to bet, that this was the very argument that promoted Gibby to start this thread :p

Perhaps you overlooked the initial post in the thread, which states:

I think I'd rather have the opinion of someone who's been playing longer than most of us have been alive.
